I’m a current major in #9, soon to be adding a dual in #3. Fuck that. Also, anthro majors: you don’t make a ton of money right out of school because most undergrads go right on to grad school. Anthro also requires a lot of working during the degree-getting process. For instance next summer I’m  most likely going to St. Thomas or Southeast Asia for 6 weeks. That’s right, class credit for going to the carribbean to dig up cool shit and/or learn about people. Can’t beat that.

Hollaaaa at Architecture being #5! Fuck that major.

Aw graphic art and design. You number four skank.

Number 2 up in the hizzy!

So anyone notice that these are “feminine” occupations that require the feminine skills of creativity, communication and understanding?  OF FUCKING COURSE MALE-ORIENTED “SCIENCE” IS GOING TO LABEL THEM USELESS.

Don’t fucking tell me that the arts are useless.  In such a visual, media-oriented society, design, creativity, and ART are everywhere.  When you go home at night, you don’t read the latest science journals about finding the largest prime number, YOU WATCH FUCKING TV, WHICH IS MADE BY WRITERS, ACTORS, DIRECTORS, AND ARTISTS.  Seriously.  do. not. fucking. TELL ME that the arts are unimportant.  Just because it’s not in a museum or a literary journal does not mean it’s not art.

Reblogging from my personal blog just because I think it’s an important message to get out: if anyone ever tells you that art and creativity are unimportant, it’s a fucking lie.  Never ever EVER feel ashamed or less-than for pursuing what you love and what you’re good at.  Honestly, where would OMG that Dress and OMG that Artifact be without creative people following their passion?

I AM A PROUD FEMINIST WOMAN, AND I FAILED REMEDIAL MATH SEVERAL TIMES.  I AM FOLLOWING MY PASSION AS A WRITER BECAUSE IT IS NOT USELESS AND UNIMPORTANT, AND I WOULDN’T DO ANYTHING ELSE.

Aha! It looks like a fair number of people did NOT read the original Newsweek feature! I do hate it when news sites give needlessly provocative titles to dry stories like these; everyone gets all worked up over nothing.

This feature is NOT science majors calling liberal arts useless! It IS an objective (“determined by science”, yeah they could’ve worded that better) list of the majors that have the hardest time finding employment after graduation. Census data was used to rank majors based on the following categories:

  • Recent graduate employment
  • Experienced graduate employment
  • Recent graduate earnings
  • Experienced graduate earnings
  • Projected growth in total number of jobs, 2010-2020

That most of those on the list happen to be liberal arts majors is just the unfortunate truth of the world. It’s more difficult to get jobs in those areas right now, whereas doctors and lawyers are always going to be in high demand, even during economic slumps. There is no feminism-bashing going on here, or anyone telling you not to follow your dreams. All this list is saying is that you might have to work a little harder, and that the market for journalism majors isn’t going to get better any time soon!

On the upside, careers related to every other major on this list are projected to experience some growth in the next few years (read the original article!). I’m in engineering, so I’m pleased to see that architecture is making a come-back. We’re finally going to start building NEW structures again!

So don’t get upset! Just accept reality and recognize that finding a job after college can be difficult for ANYONE, so DON’T GIVE UP! Do what you love, work hard, and everything else will fall into place.

Oh, and if I weren’t a civil engineering major, I would totally study history instead! :)

Ok so that’s something. They really should have labeled it as something other than “useless” than. Cause also if it’s just talking about finding a job RIGHT after college then yes it is difficult to find creative jobs. So it might take longer but these people CAN find jobs, even if it takes more time.

Exactly! Why is everyone getting so emotional over this?! If it really is the title, then this is the sort of over-the-top advertising and subsequent overreaction that the Daily Show loves to poke fun at. It’s not even a real article, just a list with data points. If it were a real article it would have an analysis of the data or some sort of opinion that people could comment on at least.

I totally get where everyone is coming from with this, but so much offense could’ve been avoided if they’d just READ THE FEATURE FROM THE ORIGINAL SOURCE!

http://www.thedailybeast.com/galleries/2012/04/23/the-13-most-useless-majors-from-philosophy-to-journalism.html#slide1

That’s true, but to be fair people were just going off the tumblr post with the offensive word being “useless”. And actually I was going off of who I reblogged it from even though I still love the person I reblogged it from and I get that you love science and I respect that and I love science too so maybe it was just how you phrased it? IDK I shouldn’t be so sensitive. ):

I don’t regret caring about the arts though, and so I don’t blame anyone for getting upset over this if they haven’t read the actual “article”. I think the fact of the matter is that people DO actually think these jobs are useless so these feelings come from people actually being told this and the “article” just worked to spark letting those feelings of resentment go. I knew a lot of friends in highschool who’s parents didn’t approve of them trying to pursuing a job in the arts and it always made me angry to hear that.

Reblogging again ‘cause Rawr’s words pretty much sum up what I think about that matter. No, I didn’t read the original article and that was my mistake, but the article’s title is pretty misleading. I guess we can all agree with that.

I don’t think science’s not important. Science IS important. Though sometimes - sometimes - it can be useless too. Depending on the field, or what you’re studying. There are lots of pointless projects, dated projects, plainly hateful projects. I say that ‘cause I come from a scientific major. I’ve seen them.

Art can also be pointless. I myself do what I consider a lot of pointless art. But art can be important too. It can achieve a lot and I don’t think it should be belittled the way it is.

My point is: both fields are important, though they’re not perfect. This is not a competiton. We should try to learn to respect each other’s choices, aptitudes and passions.

^ Oh yeah Sydney? NOBODY reads my blog?!

Sorry I shouldn’t be reblogging this again just to make a point to my sister BUT STILL

I didn’t say no one reads YOUR blog! I said no one reads MY blog!

But yes, you and your friends all make fine points, I just wish they were in response to something more substantial.

Also, I’ve yet to encounter science that was useless, but my professors love to suck all the joy out of scientific discovery by assigning busy-work projects ALL THE TIME, so I know the feel! I just took an exam today, so I actually have a strong love/hate relationship with science right now :p
